Acri can be reached from the middle Crati valley, which takes about half an hour. After a short flat stretch, the road goes uphill through cultivated countryside with olive groves to reach the Crati valley. The city extends over three hills; the ancient village is Padìa with the civic tower called (rocca dei bruzi) and the mother church of Santa Maria Maggiore), the neighborhoods of Picitti (greeks' neighborhood) and Odivella climb up to the top of the ancient castle, a fortress guarding of the deep valley of the Mucone and Chalamo rivers. The heraldic symbol of the city of Acre are three mountains, surmounted by three stars, with the words, “Acrae, Tri Vertex, Montis Fertilis, U.A. (Universitas Acrensis).
The largest part of the territory of Acre is dominated by the Greek Sila. The other part of the territory narrows on the Presila ridges and along the entire Mucone and Chàlamo valley, the major tributaries of the Crati. The city of Acre is located at 720 m above sea level, its territory extends for over 20,000 hectares, in the 1991 census it had 23,190 inhabitants, currently its population is approximately 22,989 inhabitants.
The climate is characterized by fairly harsh winters, with the possibility of snowy precipitation, while summers are generally hot and sunny. The landscape presents a large quantity of flowers and arboreal essences, and a few kilometers away the chestnut woods give way to forests of Scots pine, mountain pine and Calabrian black pine and along the roads in spring inflorescences of Italian broom, wild mallow, and heather.
